History:

Pad Thai, also known as Phad Thai, is a popular stir-fried noodle dish that originated in Thailand. Its history dates back to the 1930s when Thailand was experiencing a rice shortage due to World War II. To promote domestic rice consumption and reduce dependence on imported noodles, the Thai government encouraged the creation of new noodle dishes. This led to the invention of Pad Thai by Plaek Phibunsongkhram, the prime minister of Thailand at the time. The dish was intended to foster a sense of national identity and pride.

Ingredients Table:

IngredientsQuantity
Rice Noodles8 ounces
Vegetable Oil2 tablespoons
Garlic (minced)3 cloves
Tofu (firm, cubed)1/2 cup
Shrimp (peeled, deveined)1/2 cup
Eggs2 large
Bean Sprouts1 cup
Green Onions (sliced)1/2 cup
Crushed Peanuts1/4 cup
Lime (cut into wedges)2

Pad Thai Sauce:

IngredientsQuantity
Tamarind Paste3 tablespoons
Fish Sauce3 tablespoons
Soy Sauce2 tablespoons
Palm Sugar2 tablespoons
Water1/4 cup

Instructions:

Prepare the rice noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.

In a small bowl, mix all the Pad Thai Sauce ingredients together until the palm sugar dissolves.

In a large wok or skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.

Add the minced garlic and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Add the cubed tofu and cook until it turns golden brown, then push it to one side of the wok.

Add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the empty side of the wok and cook until they turn pink and opaque.

Push the tofu and shrimp to one side, crack the eggs into the empty space, and scramble them.

Add the cooked rice noodles to the wok and pour the Pad Thai sauce over them. Toss everything together until the noodles are well-coated with the sauce.

Add the bean sprouts and sliced green onions to the wok, and continue to stir-fry for a couple of minutes until the bean sprouts are slightly cooked.

Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. You can add more fish sauce, soy sauce, or lime juice according to your preference.

Serve the Pad Thai hot, garnished with crushed peanuts and lime wedges on the side.

Enjoy your homemade Pad Thai, a delicious and historically significant Thai noodle dish!
