History of Apple Pie:
Apple pie is a classic dessert with a long and storied history. The concept of sweet and savory pies dates back to ancient civilizations, where a simple mixture of apples, honey, and a primitive dough would be baked together. Over time, as trade and exploration spread across Europe, various cultures developed their own interpretations of the apple pie.
The modern apple pie that we know today has strong ties to Western European cuisines, particularly English and Dutch. As early European settlers migrated to North America, they brought their recipes and traditions with them, including their love for apple pie. Apples were abundant in the New World, and the pie quickly became a staple on American tables.
The phrase "as American as apple pie" reflects its cultural significance in the United States. Apple pie is often associated with comfort, tradition, and a sense of home. It has become a symbol of Americana, celebrated in songs, literature, and even as a humorous point of pride.
Whether enjoyed on its own, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or a slice of cheddar cheese (as some regions prefer), apple pie continues to delight taste buds and evoke warm memories across generations
Ingredients:
For the Crust:
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup unsalted butter, cold and diced
1 teaspoon salt
6-8 tablespoons ice water
For the Filling:
6-7 medium-sized apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
¾ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon lemon juice
A pinch of salt
For Assembly:
1 egg (for egg wash)
1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)
1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for sprinkling)
Instructions:
Prepare the Crust:
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your hands until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Gradually add ice water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough just comes together.
Divide the dough into two discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
Make the Filling:
In a mixing bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, lemon juice, and salt. Toss well to coat the apples evenly.
Assemble the Pie:
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
Roll out one disc of dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie pan. Place the rolled dough in the pan.
Add the Filling:
Pour the apple filling into the pie crust, spreading it evenly.
Top the Pie:
Roll out the second disc of dough and cut it into strips or use it as a whole to cover the pie. You can create a lattice pattern with the strips.
Seal and Bake:
Trim excess dough and crimp the edges to seal the pie.
Whisk together the egg and milk to make an egg wash. Brush it over the pie crust for a golden finish.
Sprinkle sugar over the top.
Bake the Pie:
Place the pie on a baking sheet to catch any drips and bake for about 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.
Cool and Serve:
Allow the pie to cool on a wire rack before serving. This will help the filling set.
